Two goals and a lot of heart earns James Werner Player of the Week title

Oct. 10, 2010 – Ames, Iowa – Cyclone Hockey is contented to announce James Werner as Player of the Week. Werner showed an outstanding performance and scored the Cyclones’ only two goals in the series against Arizona State University this weekend.

Werner is one of the top rookies on this year’s team. In this weekend’s match-up against the Sun Devils, Werner continued to skate around his opponents despite being cut by a skate blade earlier in the game showing true dedication to Cyclone Hockey. With four goals and one assist in the seven games he has played this season, Werner averages .71 points per game.Hailing originally from Orillia, Ontario, Werner played for the Fernie Ghostriders from the KIJHL before making his debut at Iowa State. Werner was one of five players to represent Iowa State at the World University Games tryouts in August. He was the only freshman from Iowa State to try out and showed true potential.

Head Coach Dr. Al Murdoch had a lot to say about Werner’s performance on and off the ice. “Werner exemplifies the kind of player we look for in incoming freshman. He plays with a lot of heart and focuses a lot on school not just hockey. James also showed very well at the World University Games tryouts, and we are glad to have him as a part of Cyclone Hockey.”
